THIS Thursday sees the latest event organised by the ‘Uni Girl Can’ campaign, an initiative which was launched back in October 2016 by the Union’s student activities team to encourage greater female participation in sport at university.  

Leeds University will welcome several sporting figures to campus, including former European silver medallist boxer Stacey Copeland, Alison Rose, Jessica Ennis-Hill’s physiotherapist, synchronised swimming coach Sarah Speers and former U23 World Triathlete Champion Non Stanford.

Stacey Copeland will lead a ‘give-it-a-go’ boxing session in The Edge on Thursday afternoon in an effort to promote female boxing as an active option for staying fit and healthy. Remarkably, the session was so popular that it sold out within minutes when tickets went online earlier this month.

The highlight of this latest push on the campaign will include a discussion panel in the Worsley Medical Lecture Theatre from 18.15 to 19.30, where the sports invitees will lead an in-depth debate on the issues that continue to effect women in sport, from grass roots to performance level.

The debate promises to be an insightful evening, with a chance for you to have your say on a topic that continues to evoke strong opinion. Topics discussed will reflect on how Britain’s school system can do more to increase the number of women partaking in sport, media coverage and even prize money at elite level.
