LUU Music Society Campaign to Stop Old Bar Renovations

LUU Music Society (LUUMS) have launched a petition to prevent Old Bar from being renovated, as part of the union’s multi-million pound upgrade.

The plans include new wooden chairs, chess board tables and wall graphics.

The Change.org petition, which has already attracted over 500 signatures, states: ‘The renovations to Old Bar in the Leeds University Union will make it a modern, Terrace-style bar, there is already one of these; it’s called Terrace.

‘There is a lot of love for Old Bar in its current form, it’s something different as there aren’t many proper pubs outside of the city centre. It’s a nice comfortable place to sit, drink, eat, work, to name a few, this atmosphere must be preserved if life on campus is to continue.

Old Bar is perfect as it is, as can be seen from the fact that it’s constantly packed, you can’t improve on perfection so don’t even try. #saveoldbar.’

LUU released the initial interior design sketches for Old Bar, Raven Theatre and Gallery this week, and the Old Bar plans have attracted considerable negative feedback.

On Facebook Toke Dahler, LUU Union Affairs Officer, commented: ‘Appreciate all of your comments. Sounds like there is work to be done! Obviously the interior designers will have to take student feedback seriously.’
He urged people to visit unionupgrade.com to express their comments on the development plans.
