Ever dreamed of partying it up, Great Gatsby style? Swing Society has it sorted!
Say the word ‘swing’ and most people will think of the music genre. Swing music has been around since the late 1920s, and is known for its strong, syncopated rhythm and jazzy feel. Beginning on the dance floors of Harlem, New York, swing is the collective term used to describe the the range of partnered and solo dances that developed alongside this style of music.
Swing Society are giving you the chance to try this timeless dance at their GIAG on the 28th of January. The dance class will be held in Michael Sadler (LG10) from 8-9 pm. Swing is best known for the dance styles of Lindy Hop and Charleston – but that doesn’t mean that you have to know them! The event is free and everyone is welcome, regardless of skill level or availability of partners (you change partners throughout the event, so it’s also a great place to meet new people). If you want to try out something new, sidestep to swing music and learn about a whole different community and dance style, the GIAG is the place to be.
Swing Society meets up every Thursday at the same place (Michael Sadler LG10) for a number of different classes, ranging from Solo Jazz to intermediate swing. This is always followed by a trip to Old Bar for a drink and a chat. The society is open to everyone, regardless of degree, year or profession. In fact, one of the members is a professor of maths at the university! To join this semester costs £18.00, which includes all the classes.
So, what are you waiting for? The dance party of the (last) century is about to begin, and you’re invited!
