Broadcast live from the Beverly Hills Hilton, Los Angeles, last night, the 73rd Golden Globes celebrates the best in film and TV, both domestic and international. The awards are often hailed as the Oscars’ drunken aunt; a sentiment epitomised by their scathing host, Ricky Gervais, who last night decreed the awards best used as “something to hit burglars with”. Good job he’s got three himself – safety first.
The Revenant, which was hotly tipped for awards success this year, took home the top prizes beating Carol and Mad Max: Fury Road to win Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Actor (Drama) for Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of explorer Hugh Glass, and Best Director with Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who has managed to pick up some more awards hot on the tails of Birdman’s success last year. The Martian (review here) won Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), with Matt Damon taking home Best Actor in the comedy category for his leading role (and yes, The Martian is now officially considered a comedy).
Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) for her leading role in Joy, beating her friend and writing partner Amy Schumer to take the prize. You can read our review of Joy here. Brie Larson triumphed over tough competition from both Saoirse Ronan and Cate Blanchett to take home the Globe for Best Actress (Drama) for her role in Room.
On the TV side of things, there were wins for – to name but a few – Amazon original Mr. Robot, which took home Best Drama and Best Supporting Actor for Christian Slater; Jon Hamm, who picked up another award for his portrayal of Don Draper in AMC’s multi award-winning Mad Men; while Oscar Isaac and Lady Gaga took home the gongs for Best Performance by an Actor/Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for their appearances in Show Me A Hero and American Horror Story: Hotel, respectively.
