Legendary artist David Bowie has lost his battle with cancer, after being diagnosed 18 months ago. The rock star was 69.

Bowie’s death was confirmed on his official Facebook page:

“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

There have been rumours about the star’s health for many years, though the news is likely to come as a shock to many.

His lastest album, Blackstar, released last week to coincide with his 69th birthday, has been seen as a return to form.
