Forecasting for 2016

In the past year, we’ve had more trends than we could keep up with. From the 90’s revival of chokers, bucket hats and fringing, sheer gowns, chic sportswear and trainers galore amongst man buns, contouring and plumped lips aplenty, it’s certain we’ve been pretty busy. Whilst some proved dangerous and others had us raiding the antiques, 2015 sure is going to be remembered. But what do we predict or more importantly hope to see next year? With Gucci’s campaign running riot online, statement lips courtesy of Pat McGrath and Lupita making waves, and of course the upcoming Zoolander film promising outrageous outfits and trends, we’ve compiled a list of what we think 2016 has to offer.

Rose Quartz and Pink

With the announcement from Pantone that one of the colours of 2016 would be ‘Rose Quartz’, we’re expecting pink everywhere. Designers like Diane Von Fürstenberg and Alessandro Michele at Gucci have injected shades of pink including the soft blush colour into their collections pre-empting an imminent pink takeover.

Serenity and blue

The second colour awarded the colour of 2016  title was ‘serenity’. From pastels to neon, blue has been in collections from Erdem to Celine in gowns, coats and accessories alike; all have been painted the versatile shade proving its presence for the new year.

*Blue makeup has even taken off with Lupita sporting a blue lip at the Star Wars premiere and Chanel, Marc Jacobs and Missoni all incorporating blue eyes into their looks.*

Yellow

It’s the colour of the brand Marmite and just like the spread you either love it or you don’t. Whether its mustard or a pastel shade, we’ve seen spurts of the colour in numerous pieces from SS16 with Giambatista Valli’s finale gown sporting the bold hue and Gucci with a floral suit in the shade. If you’re not feeling daring, simply add the colour into your outfit via accessories, à la Gucci Pre-Fall.

Streetwear

In the past year we’ve seen the like of chic joggers and floral bomber jackets and the trend for stylish streetwear isn’t going anywhere. Bomber jackets, hoodies and combat trousers from the likes of Balenciaga and Chloe illustrated how cool sportswear and the trend of athleisure is just as prominent.

Bare shoulders

From Cutouts to barely-there dainty straps to elasticated off shoulder necklines next year is the year of cold shoulders. Whether it’s an evening dress or a boho top, get ready to bare your shoulders for 2016.

Layering

Alternatively, keep yourself warm as layering looks to be another trend for 2016. Throw on knits and vests like Jonathan Saunders and Topshop on top of slip dresses or skirts or under plunging necklines for a 90’s look we all love.

Victoriana

Pussy-bows, floral prints, ruffles, lace and elegant silhouettes. If it’s not texture, its print or cut, but the Victorian inspired looks featured in the Spring Summer and Pre-Fall collections only prove our obsession with the elegant, feminine era of fashion is here to stay.

forecast15L-R: Erdem SS16, Alexander McQueen SS16, Fendi SS16, Valentino Pre-Fall 16, Delpozo Pre-Fall 16

Lingerie

One of the more sexy trends we’ve seen coming to the forefront has been lingerie inspired daywear. Out of the bedroom and on to the streets go the rich silks, lace hems and slip dresses. Dressed up for an evening look with a fur stole or heavy jewellery or dressed down with some heeled boots this look is easy to wear sensuality at its finest.

Robes

Following on from the trend to bring nightwear outside we have the rise of the robe. Thakoon and Givenchy featured long, coloured robes, throwing them on top of understated outfits for a chic addition. And the trend is seen to follow onto Fall with Fendi using the silhouette for outerwear with a range of fuzzy coats in the robe style.

Animal Print

Fierce looks come in the form of animal print via Versace and Burberry who both used the graphic in their collections. It doesn’t have to look cheap and you don’t have to be a Kardashian to wear it. No matter if it’s a skirt, coat or sweatshirt, zebra, cheetah or tiger, we’ve seen animal prints everywhere, foreshadowing the revival of animal print into our overspilling wardrobes.

Statement Lips

When Prada’s girls came out rocking gold lips we all looked in awe. But, it’s not just in the name of high end fashion as Pat McGrath attempts to make Gold the colour of 2016 in makeup with her gold pigments selling out instantaneously. Most recently, Lupita showcased blue lips at the Star Wars premiere demonstrating a mystical bold look. If you’re not daring enough for the unconventional colours, try red hues from vibrant reds to vampy purples for a statement lip to jazz up any outfit.

Au- natural

2015 was undeniably the year of contouring. With new techniques coming out every other month, we just couldn’t get enough of the sculpted cheekbones and heavy highlight. Looking at numerous shows for Spring Summer however suggests a bare faced, natural look emphasising healthy skin is the way to go for 2016. We’re all for it- minimal makeup equals less time and effort!

Flats are back

A footwear trend comfortable and safe for all. Flat shoes took over Spring Summer shoes with Dior and Burberry shows featuring flat sandals shunning the stiletto. And the trainer takeover isn’t ending if it’s got anything to do with Calvin Klein who included anklet trainers in his show for a more feminine take on the sporty staple.
