Candi Staton – Do Your Duty / Evidence – Pepe Bradock Remixes (Honest Jon’s)

When you put disco’s biggest voice together with house’s most revered producer, you get something sensational. No wonder it’s been re-pressed. Side A has a nosebleeding build up that vehemently refuses to drop, while side B has a beefed up rework of Staton’s ‘Evidence’, as well as an abstract percussion track. This is Bradock at his freakiest.

Contours – Technician (Rhythm Section International)

Leeds-born, London-based Boiler Roomer and DJ, Bradley Zero, continues where he left off with Chaos In CBD’s Midnight in Peckham release back in August by releasing yet another gorgeous jazz-house nugget. This time it’s the Mancunian newcomer Contours who provides six tracks of those loose, broken yet groovy rhythms that are becoming the label’s inimitable trademark.

Gari Romalis – Comeback (Subwax)

Romalis is one of Detroit’s unsung heroic producers. He’s a bit of a genius, aligning with the Moodymann school of sampling, and purveying a sepia-tinged sound that conjures images of the motor city’s classic roller discos. ‘Comeback’ is a departure in a way: the sound is darker and dubbier, yet retains his signature warm, crusty aesthetic. Get to know.

John FM – Alone (FXHE)

This came out elsewhere in October, but has just arrived in British record shops. Omar S has the midas touch. FXHE is his label, and he remixes the third track on this quite bizarre EP that showcases dancefloor-evading oddities from Detroit producer John FM. There’s a couple of abstract slow burners, a decomposed acid track and a bit of dirty ambience. Buy this if you’re feeling brave.

Ben Boe – Journeys Into The Realm of Team 17 (Contrast Wax)

God knows what the title of this EP means. But it doesn’t matter. Ben Boe continues to be king of the underground. He runs Boe Recordings, whose roster is a veritable whose who of deep house’s most respected producers. This three tracker, however, comes on Contrast Wax, and it’s an exhibition of polished, pitch black deep house and acid that will find its home in the early hours.
