Preview: Lysistrata – 3rd and 4th November

The university theatre community has returned with a bang for this semester’s season of student productions, and from Tuesday 3rd – Wednesday 4th November, Open Theatre will return with a new adaptation of Lysistrata.

Based on Aristophanes classic Greek comedy, Lysistrata portrays a group of women who renounce sex in a bid to convince men to cease the war effort. Directors Gemma Wisdom and Zosh Skowronska have given this classic play an ‘Open Theatre twist’ by deciding to set it in the Yorkshire town of  Orgreave, South Yorkshire during the miners’ strike of the 1980’s.

The play itself has had a strong feminist involvement within the past, especially with popular figures such as Germaine Greer. Co – Director, Gemma commented that ‘with all university’s especially with this one and for people leaving university there’s pay gaps in jobs…all themes in the play are around now and it’s important to show its progression’

Lysistrata will be performed in stage one in stage @ Leeds next Tuesday 3rd November and Wednesday 4th November, and tickets are priced £9 and £7 concessions.
