Security were called to the Parkinson Building on Wednesday night following reports of students’ anti-social behaviour.
The incident occurred at around 10pm when the fire alarm was set off.
It is believed that the group of young male students were from Leeds Trinity University. Police confirmed that they had been under the influence of alcohol.
A University spokesperson told The Gryphon, ‘We can confirm that the fire alarm in the Parkinson Building was activated at 10.15pm on Wednesday evening. Security officers attended and found a small number of intoxicated people causing a disturbance within the building. The police were called and the group was escorted off the premises. None of the individuals concerned were staff or students at the University of Leeds.’
One witness at the time said the students were ‘wearing their football kit’. First year Middle Eastern studies and Politics student, Yusra Ahmed, had shared images online of security officers seizing the students.
She said, ‘I was eating some food with friends which is when we first noticed the students entering the building. Five minutes later, the fire alarm went off and a large fire curtain dropped from the balcony with around five students emerging from beneath it, only to be met by security who’d obviously anticipated some trouble.’
West Yorkshire Police officers were later called to the scene.
In a statement to the newspaper, the University’s liaison police officer, PC Matt Guy said, ‘University Security officers had already located and detained the group of intoxicated males who identified themselves as being Leeds Trinity University Students. Two males were issued with Community Resolutions due to their behaviour and the rest of the group were warned regarding their future conduct. Leeds University Security services have contacted Leeds Trinity University in regards to this incident and passed on the details of those involved for future disciplinary action’.
