In just three weeks time, thousands will descend onto the French capital for this year’s instalment of Weather Festival. Held on the spacious Bois de Vincennes, the festival has rapidly gained international attention for putting together stunning line-ups and drawing passionate and energetic crowds.
It might be a bit of a surprise that Weather is the first international techno and house festival ever to be held in the city, and so for many, this has been a long time coming. Weather’s rise to fame is perhaps timely, over a decade of dormancy since the ‘90s heyday – pioneered by national treasures such as DJ Deep and Laurent Garnier – has left the city lying in the shadow of European counter-parts such as Berlin, Amsterdam and London.
Four main stages, named thematically after each season, will accommodate the impressive line-up. Heading the bill this year include familiar faces: Ben Klock, Blawan, Robert Hood (as Floorpan), Floating Points, and Four Tet. While more nuanced bookings include Yves de May and live sets from In Aeternam Vale, Xosar, and Peter van Hoesen.
What initially caught our attention was Weather’s rare aptitude for curation. The line-up boasts some of techno’s newer talents, including Vatican Shadow and Roman Poncet, while also hauling in some of the genre’s early pioneers: Jeff Mills, Borderland (Juan Atkins and Mortiz von Oswald) and Derrick May.
This year’s line-ups also feature a selection of very promising collaborations, including the newly formed Unforeseen Alliance (Zadig, Antigone, Birth Of Frequency, Voiski), Collabs3000 (Chris Liebing, Speedy J), Adventice (DJ Deep, Roman Poncet), and a number of exciting back-to-back sessions. Such a diverse and well-balanced line-up also includes a strong contingency of home-grown talent and promises to be an absolute treat for those attending.
This year Weather has also organised a series of OFF events that will precede the main festival from the 28th May. Taking place at various iconic locations throughout the city, these will include talks, workshops and parties, as well as a children-friendly day programme on the 30th May. Weather ON will commence on the 7th June.
