Leeds has been celebrating an incredible year this week with Celebrate 2015. The week, running from the 27th April-7th May, is focused on sharing the very best achievements from both staff and students at Leeds, with a week of awards and showcases.
The first event was the Partnership Awards on the 27th April, celebrating both staff and students for the exemplary work which improves our experiences at Leeds. The Inspirational Teaching award was given to Professor Margaret Atack from the school of Languages, Cultures and Societies. Lawrence Thompson, the President of Mind Matters, was awarded the Wellbeing Champion award.
The celebration continued with the Hall Exec, Volunteer Celebration, and Leeds for Life Citizenship Awards. The RAG Community Fund was also celebrated for raising £7,200 which is being distributed to 14 different charities.
At the Sports Colours awards on Wednesday, 29th April, sports clubs and students were celebrated for their achievements throughout the year. Callum Craven won The Gryphon Award for Outstanding Sporting Performance, and Emma Murray from Leeds Uni Boat Club won Most Improved Athlete. Netball climbed to victory winning Club of the Year and Gymnastics proved themselves by winning Most Improve Team.
On Friday, LUU was abuzz with excitement for the Riley’s, showcasing the amazing achievements of societies over the last year. Entertainment was provided by a huge range of societies including Dance Expose, Spoken Word, Street Dance and Cheerleading that got the audience on their feet.
For those unlucky enough to be without a ticket, the Old Bar were streaming a live feed and Twitter lovers were kept up to date by The Gryphon.
Lawrence Thompson was in for another award this week as Mind Matter won Most Improved Society. LSR claimed victory for Best Society and Student not Suspects won Best Campaign. The Best Longstanding Collaboration Award was given to Faith societies for InterFaith Week, The Gryphon was awarded Best Publicity, and Best Event went to Kickboxing and Krav Maga. It was a night to remember as awards were given left, right and centre and Leeds talent was shown at its best.
