Preview – Dancing For Despo

Distrikt bar is the beating heart of the house music community in Leeds. Over its five years in establishment, in a sort of extension of the Back to Basics golden era of West Yorkshire house, it has staged some of the world’s biggest DJs, from Derrick May to Doorly – and the gigs are always free.

But their charitable nature doesn’t stop there.

This vibrant community is coming together, to the dancefloor, to raise funds (or ‘Fund Rave’) for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of DJ Despo aka Duncan Michael Wilson, one of the most respected characters on the Leeds house music scene who tragically died of testicular cancer in 2013. He was a DJ, actor, comedian and local legend.

In this, Dancing For Despo’s second annual event, Adam Shelton, Tristan Da Cunha, PBR Streetgang, Laura Jones, Gavin Herlihy, Frenchy, Jonny Wren and Adam Ross will spin many an acid house track, in an attempt to realise Despo’s idea of a ‘Gold Party’ – one that he sadly couldn’t throw for himself.

Do your bit by Dancing for Despo on Saturday 11th April at Distrikt. £2 entry on the door.
