The first instalment of Editors’ Choice 2015 is teeming with the latest talent that Leeds (and beyond) has to offer. With the increasingly erratic weather, there’s more reason to stay in and curl up with your headphones than ever. We, your humble guides, offer only a starting point for your musical escapades but we can assure you that 2015 is a year that we are very excited for indeed.
1.
Menace Beach – Tastes Like Medicine
Taken from Ratworld, the official video (produced by none other than Pulled Apart By Horses) for ‘Tastes Like Medicine’ showcases the gorgeous vocals of Menace Beach’s Liza and Ryan and some distinctively Leedscentric production and design. If this song doesn’t get absolutely huge then there is something seriously wrong with British music.
2.
Petite Noir – Chess
This track is divine. Ilunga’s vocals are incredible, the composition of ‘Chess’ is incredible and the 80s style video is mesmerising. To put it simply, ‘Chess’ sounds like Kele Okereke x Arcade Fire x TV On The Radio and it is everything you could ever expect and more.
3.
Death Cab For Cutie – Black Sun
Ahead of the release of Kintsugi, Death Cab For Cutie quietly slipped ‘Black Sun’ onto iTunes for immediate purchase. A track that fuses the melancholy of Plans with the energy of Codes and Keys, ‘Black Sun’ interlaces DCFC’s ventures into ‘less guitarcentric’ work with the poignancy and meditation of their much loved older albums.
4.
James Bay – Hold Back The River
Winner of BRITS Critic’s Choice, James Bay is set to explode into the mainstream this year. His cover of HAIM’s ‘Forever’ on BBC Live Lounge and his performance of ‘Scars’ on The Amazing Sessions at Beacons Festival 2014 alone are enough to send shivers down your spine.

Aphex Twin – Diskhat ALL Prepared1mixed [snr2mix]
Less than six months after the release of Syro, Aphex Twin returns with his latest creation Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments Pt. 2. Released as a preview, ‘Diskhat ALL Prepared1mixed [snr2mix]’ demands multiple listens. Even then, it’s difficult to fully comprehend the genius that is Richard D James. The intricately layered mix is unsettling yet tantalising throughout – Aphex Twin has done it again.
