TUESDAY – The Evil Dead (Film4 00:20)
Horror films these days are not as they were in their heyday. The Evil Dead is a classic tale of five young friends who travel to a cabin in the woods, but get more than they bargained for. It is everything that you could want from a horror film! Although you may think it cliché, this is the film that established those clichés, being a significant film is horror history. A must watch for any horror fan.
WEDNESDAY – Girl, Interrupted (Movie Mix 21:00)
Recently, the queen of Hollywood glamour Angelina Jolie has embraced directing again, with her second directorial, Unbroken, reaching cinema screens soon. Jolie is well known for being a beautiful actress, but her acting skills are often underestimated. Anyone who has seen Girl, Interrupted cannot deny that her acting skills are astonishing. In this story based on Susanna Kaysen’s account of her 18-month stay at a mental hospital in the 1960s, Jolie infects every scene with a great presence, completely stealing the show with a performance she is yet to better.
THURSDAY – Das Boot (Film4 23:05)
There are many great German films about World War Two, such as The Wave and Downfall. However, Das Boot is the best of them all, a remarkable film about the claustrophobic world of a German U-Boat that is emotionally draining and intense. A classic war film that features heavily the themes of duty, patriotism, fear and hope, it is a powerful experience that has a real impact.
FRIDAY – We Own The Night (ITV1 23:15)
On a Friday night, all you need is a good thriller, and who better to provide this than Mr. Muscle himself, Mark Wahlberg, with We Own The Night. With a cracking cast that also includes the likes of Eva Mendes and Joaquin Phoenix, it is a thrilling story about a nightclub manager who tries to save his family from the Russian mafia. With well-developed characters and a tense story, it is overall a good thriller. Perfect for a Friday night in.
SATURDAY – Heat (Film4 23:05)
However, if a really good thriller is what you want, then Heat is for you. Director Michael Mann is one of the best directors of modern cinematic history, and the pinnacle of his career was Heat, which follows a group of bank robbers who are being tracked by the police. Robert De Niro and Al Pacino play the two lead roles, with a dynamic relationship on screen that reaches a climax in the infamous diner scene; a definitive moment in film history. Such a classic!
SUNDAY – Stardust (Channel 4 14:50)
Who would have thought that Matthew Vaughn, director of the black dramatic comedy Kick-Ass, could have directed the magical wonder Stardust. Since it is the first week of December, Stardust is definitely the film to watch to get you into the Christmas spirit, with its magical story about fallen stars and fantastical realms. With a stellar cast that includes Henry Cavill and Claire Danes, it is perfect for a Sunday afternoon indoors, hiding from the cold.
