Three University of Leeds Students have caused what has been described as a ‘social media firestorm’, after their petition against Victoria Secrets’ ‘Perfect Body’ advertising campaign gains international momentum.
Students Frances Black, Gabriella Kountourides, and Laura Ferris started the petition, which calls for the American lingerie company to “Apologise for, and amend the irresponsible marketing of [its] new bra range”, on Change.org after Black saw the advert as she was walking through Trinity Shopping Centre.
So far the online petition has amassed over 8,500 signatures and has sparked a monumental reaction on social media, with many criticizing the brand for the irresponsible message it is sending through the advert, which is being used on their website, as well as in their seven stores across the UK.
Although Victoria Secret UK are yet to respond, the petition has also induced a reaction on the global stage. On Wednesday, American blogger and TV personality Perez Hilton, tackled the issue on his ‘CoCoPerez’ fashion page. As well as praising the petition, Perez concluded “Victoria’s Secret isn’t exactly known for its body diversity, but we have to admit this ad campaign is extremely tone-deaf.”
Speaking to The Gryphon Gabriella Kountourides, one of the creators of the petition, said:
“Its going global because its a serious issue that everyone can relate to, both men and women, young and old. I think the public is crying out for people to hold big companies to account for their actions. The usual adverts depict the same model type (male and female, putting pressure on both) but this one went a step too far, and dared to call it perfect…wrong move! Our petition is not about skinny shaming, its about accepting all body types, each person can make up their own mind as to what is perfect…we don’t need to be told!”
