Well, it’s a good week to be a superhero fan. We’ve had so much news in the past two days from both Marvel and DC it’s hard to know where to begin.
On Tuesday it was reported by Variety that Robert Downey Jnr is on the verge of signing a contract to appear again as Iron Man in the yet to be titled Captain America 3. This film is set to take the franchise in a whole different direction, as it is rumoured to bring to life the Civil War story arc from the comic books, which will involve Stark and Captain America’s alter ego Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) coming to loggerheads over The Superhero Registration Act, which seeks to force superheroes into revealing their identities to the U.S. government, and agreeing to work for them. The tension will occur when Stark supports the act, and Rogers opposes it. The most interesting dynamic here is that it’ll lead to Stark becoming the villain of sorts. Which side will you choose? It’s a question sure to occupy the promo boards. The storyline is set to be a continuation of political themes present in Captain America 2, and as the Civil War comics were only published in 2006, we’ll certainly see a storyline with strong cultural significance.
And if this news wasn’t enough to quench the superhero thirst of any comic book fan, DC recently announced that Aquaman and The Flash have been cast. Jason Momoa, best known as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones who has been rumoured to be playing Aquaman for months, has now been officially confirmed. Ezra Miller however, is something more of a left-field choice as The Flash; best known for roles in We Need to Talk about Kevin and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
And, to top this already delicious action-packed cake, DC have also produced a somewhat release date splurge on upcoming films up to 2020. DC are intent to convey their vision for the comic book world, and it’s beautiful.

- 2016 – Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer
- 2017 – Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot
- 2017 – Justice League Part One, directed by Zach Synder, with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Amy Adams reprising their roles
- 2018 – The Flash, starring Ezra Miller
- 2018 – Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa
- 2019 – Shazam, starring Dwayne Johnson
- 2019 – Justice League Part Two, directed by Zach Snyder
- 2020 – Cyborg, starring Ray Fisher
- 2020 – Green Lantern
