A sleek haired model slinks down the catwalk at Au Jour le Jour in Paris, where larger than life caricature lips and illustrative fruit cover most garments. Nichols Ghesquiere’s, the creative director of Louis Vuitton, also adorned his models in amusing prints of make up, household appliances and muscle cars transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. And of course it’s no surprise that Jeremy Scott demonstrates his usual quirky aesthetic with unconventional graphics demonstrating black and white skulls writhing in flames with a feminine twist.
Novelty prints add a hint of humour and prove for an unmistakable way to brighten up winter outfits. With the presence of lurking clouds and greying skies, the idea of dressing up for the day seems daunting. However, though the dull days roll on, take a cue from Spring Summer 2015 runway in order to serve up some personality while layering for the cold.
It’s almost as if the designers are drawing from American subculture, when mass consumerism and pop art ruled the 60’s. The repetitive prints bring out a sense of artistic nostalgia where names like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein come to mind, this trend is all about embracing wearable design to make a statement.
