Editors’ Choice w / 7th October

To give you a glimpse into the hearts and minds of your four favourite people at In The Middle, we the music editors have decided to lovingly curate our favourite tracks into weekly playlists. Week 2 features local favourites Submotion Orchestra alongside the Ethiopian melodies of Mikael Seifu [listen to week 1 here].

1.

Marina and the Diamonds – Froot

2 years after her Electro Heart tour, Marina is back. The title track from her upcoming album, the saccharine sweet hooks and deep, operatic harmonies in ‘Froot’ go together like milk and honey.

2.
Badbadnotgood – Velvet

The latest gift from the Toronto based jazz hip-hop trio is ‘Velvet’, a timeless and velvety smooth offering. The kind of track that would be perfect with a glass of wine, BBNG have done it again.

3.
Mikael Seifu – Tuff Ruff

A fusion between Ethiopian folk and UK garage, ‘Tuff Ruff’ is a stunning single. With Ethiopian voices swirling around the intricate melodies of a Masenqo lute, Seifu has interwoven the ancestral with the modern to create something truly beautiful.

4.
Submotion Orchestra
– Trust/Lust

A sultry and slow single that swells to a heady climax, ‘Trust/Lust’ effortlessly combines soulful jazz with feverish synths.

5.
DJ Nori – 80s Drugs

Motor City Drum Ensemble dropped this during their set on 10th (along with Aphex Twin’s Window Licker) and the crowd absolutely loved it. If you’re a fan of disco-tinged house and acid-flecked synth, this is for you.

6.
PC Music –
In My Dreams

PC Music Wunderkind, Danny L Harle, continues to distort the labels distorted pop aesthetic with a touch of the bitter sweet.
