UPDATED: Man arrested following blaze in Leeds city centre

A 32-year old man has been arrested following a fire which caused damages to the building formerly known as the Majestyk nightclub in Leeds City Centre.

The fire started in the early hours of Wednesday morning, in the building which is situated between Wellington Street and Quebec Street.

According to local reports, around 50 firefighters were called to the scene after the alarm was raised at 7.19pm. Grey smoke was seen to be coming from the roof of the building.

It has been confirmed that the building was largely saved and that the fire did not spread to surrounding areas.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have released a statement saying that ten fire engines attended the scene and crews used three aerial appliances to douse the flames.

It has also been confirmed that nobody was inside the building when the fire broke out, at 7.20pm, and there have been no
persons involved or injured.

Emergency services worked alongside Leeds City Council Emergency Planning Team as well as other
agencies.

Assistant Chief Officer Dave Walton said: “The fire was largely under control by around midnight,
however, crews have been in attendance overnight and four appliances remain at the scene this morning
as the remaining pockets of fire are extinguished.”

He added: “Our crews have worked fantastically hard to tackle this serious fire and I would like to thank them for
their tireless efforts. This has been a massive multi-agency effort by all partners involved.”

“Although the building is extensively damaged, it is still standing and we are hopeful that this Grade II
listed building can be restored to its former glory in time.”

A full fire investigation is still underway.
