Our weekly freeview flicks picks are here! This week we have to run away from yet more zombies, fall in love with a date-doctor and discover Facebook.
MONDAY – 28 Weeks Later (Film4 23:40)
Last week’s Freeview Flicks recommended Danny Boyle’s zombie horror 28 Days Later. It therefore seems appropriate to watch the sequel, 28 Weeks Later. Set six months after the first film you can still expect lots of zombies, virus references and moments that will make you jump from your seat. Although not as good as Boyle’s first films, it is a decent enough horror.
TUESDAY – The Blues Brothers (ITV4 22:00)
John Landis is a man of many talents. Not only was he responsible for perhaps the most famous music video of all-time, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, but he also made a name for himself as a film director, responsible for classics such as An American Werewolf in London and The Blues Brothers. Following a man just released from prison who sets up a band to try and save the Catholic home in which he was raised, it is both hilarious and heart-warming moments. A real treat which also features some great music!
WEDNESDAY – Hitch (5* 21:00)
There are some people in this world who are quite frankly impossible not to like. Will Smith is one such person, a man with great charisma, good looks and a likeable personality. That is what made him an ideal choice to play Hitch, a charming date-doctor who finds himself troubled when his game doesn’t work on a gossip columnist with whom he is completely smitten. Although not brilliant, it is light-hearted, entertaining and funny, perfect for a Wednesday night off freshers.
THURSDAY – The Social Network (Film4 23:30)
Who would have thought the story of how a computer nerd founded Facebook could be so tense, gripping and full of drama? Well as David Fincher proves with his film based on the best-selling book The Accidental Billionaires, it certainly can! Based on true facts and real events, we follow Jesse Eisenberg’s angst ridden and rather clever teenage Mark Zuckerberg. He creates Facebook, finds himself in the spotlight, and some rather tricky court cases, and, of course, rapidly becomes a millionaire. With a superb script, tense drama and brilliant performances, it grips you from the start.
FRIDAY – Panic Room (Film4 23:00)
Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart, before she turned all moody in her Twilight roles, play a mother and daughter whose new house is broken into by three men searching for a fortune. A clever thriller with twists and turns that take you by surprise, it will certainly keep you completely gripped until the end. Just maybe don’t watch it before going to sleep.
SATURDAY – The Woman In Black (Film4 23:40)
Another film worth watching, but maybe not before you go to sleep, is The Woman In Black, a horror based on the terrifying book that is now a best-selling play that tours the country. A classic horror story, complete with an old haunted house, creepy children and a terrifying ghost. Quite frankly terrifying, with a superb performance from Daniel Radcliffe, proving he is more than ‘the boy who lived’.
SUNDAY – The Descendants (Channel 4 21:00)
It seems that the young actress Shailene Woodley is everywhere at the moment, recently bring us to tears in recent weeks with her performance in The Fault in Our Stars. Yet, it is in Alexander Payne’s The Descendants though where she first stole our attention and became instantly recognised as one of Hollywood’s best upcoming actresses. Playing the troubled daughter of a land baron (George Clooney) whose wife has been seriously injured in an accident, she steals the show. A good drama that is enjoyable, heart-warming and emotional, it is Payne at his best.
