Firefighters are dealing with a blaze at Nottingham University.
The fire is suspected to have started in the Glaxo Smith Kline building on the University’s Jubilee campus. According to a spokesperson the area is currently undergoing construction.
Around fifty firefighters were called to the campus at approximately 20.30pm tonight.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue warned locals to avoid the area by tweeting: “Help our crews by staying away from the Triumph Rd area & close doors & windows if you’re local – flying debris making conditions difficult.”
Spokesperson and registrar for the University of Nottingham Dr. Paul Greatrix has stated that the University’s planned open day on Saturday would go ahead in all circumstances.
“Our number one priority is to ensure that the fire does not spread to other buildings in the vicinity and we are grateful to the fire teams on site who have worked extremely hard to contain the blaze” Said Greatrix in a statement.
Several images of the blaze have been posted on social media.
User @Gaz23Brown described the situation by tweeting, “absolutely crazy scenes!”
A third year University of Nottingham student said: “I live about a ten minutes away from Jubilee Campus, and I could see plumes of smoke, embers flying everywhere. The tower was lit up orange and I could see a few flames from my bedroom window”.
Third year UoN History student Holly Lunness said: “I’m worried about all the work and resources the students affiliated with the lab will have lost, they’re going to be massively disadvantaged going into the new year – not sure how the university is going to compensate for this.”
Currently no injuries have been reported.
According to several reports, Nottingham Police have also been called onsite with a helicopter monitoring the blaze. Further details of how the fire started are yet to be released.
