News | Future Leeds student dies in unexplained fall

Tributes have been paid to a student about to start at Leeds University who died last Wednesday.

Jeevan Singh Dhanda, who held an offer to study economics, was found on railway tracks at Birmingham New Street Station on 7th August.

He was taken to hospital by emergency services, who attempted to treat injuries ‘consistent with a fall from height’, British Transport Police said. Jeevan died after being treated in a critical care unit six days later.

The 18-year-old was discovered alongside a 30-year-old man, who also passed away following the incident. However, it is not clear whether the two men knew each other, and police are treating the deaths as ‘unexplained’.

Jeevan died on the eve of A-level results day. His family later learned he had achieved three A-grades and a place at Leeds.

Jeevan or ‘Jeev’ as he was known to friends was a member of Cannock Hockey Club, and was believed to have been a keen player. The Club has since retired his number-55 playing shirt.

In a statement, his family said: “Jeevan was a loving son and brother and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him. Our lives will never be the same without him and we were privileged to have had him for a short 18 years”.

British Transport Police are investigating ‘several lines of enquiry’ into the incident.
