Ayesha Ahmed, a Chemical and Nuclear Engineering student at Leeds University died on the 25th July after developing pneumonia.
The 21-year-old from Newcastle had suffered from rare Wegener’s Disease throughout her early life which caused her severe breathing difficulties. For most of nine years she relied on an oxygen machine 24-hours-a-day, according to Chronicle Live.
Ayesha had recently undergone surgery in 2011, becoming the world’s youngest double lung transplant patient with Wegener’s Disease and was awarded Chronicle’s Young Achievers Award in 2010.
Fellow students and relatives have flooded Ayesha’s Facebook wall with their condolences, many describing her as ‘an inspiration’ for her courage throughout the battle to stay alive.
Ayesha served as a committee member on PakSoc and has been described by the society as ‘spontaneous’. She was also ‘heavily involved’ with Leeds Snowriders last year.
PakSoc spokesperson, Mohammad Zubair told Leeds Student: ‘Her presence in any gathering was a privilege for us all, and with her, came this overwhelming aura of positivity. She was a reservoir of hope and inspiration for all that knew her. She will surely be missed, but never forgotten.’
A Snowriders spokesperson said: ‘Our thoughts are with Ayesha’s family at this time’.
Students affected by Ayesha’s death are being urged to contact the University’s Counselling Service.
