DJ Detweiler (real name unknown) is a curious character. Born in Murcia. Based in Berlin. These are the only solid truths the internet will let slip on the genre-creating Spanish producer.
Past interviews with The Guardian, Mixmag, Thump and Vice have all completely failed to unravel the enigma; to reveal the man behind the mask; to truly understand the master of the flute.
As you might have imagined, the interview I recently held was absolutely no different at all.
Here’s how it went down, in all it’s uncut, caps-locked glory.
So you’re from Murcia? I had a friend who lived there last year, what’s it like?
MURCIA WAS INVADED BY MEXICANS IN 1450, SO SINCE THEN WE HAVE THERE A BIG BIG INFLUENCE IN OUR CULTURE. WE SAY WORDS LIKE ‘CHIDO’ OR ‘GÜEY’ THAT NOT BELONG TO SPANISH LANGUAGE, BUT IN MURCIA IS PRETTY COMMON. ALSO WE ALWAYS WEAR MEXICAN HATS, AND OUR BREAKFAST IS GUACAMOLE WITH NACHOS.
Where did your idea for flute drop come from? Did the inspiration come from a specific event? Or have you always known flute drop was to be your destiny?
I DID DREAM IT. LITERALLY EVERY INTERVIEW I GAVE ASKED ME THIS. SO I SUGGEST SEARCH ON INTERNET THE WHOLE STORY, IT APPEARS ON THE GUARDIAN, MIXMAG, VICE, THUMP, AND MANY MANY OTHERS.
Tell me about your label Chin Stroke Records, what does the future hold?
CHIN STROKE RECORDS HAS BEEN SUPER SUCCESSFUL ALREADY WE HAVE SOLD THOUSANDS OF TAPES ALL OVER THE WORLD. I HOPE THAT ONE DAY WE WILL BE BOUGHT BY SONY AND ALL THE BORING ADMINISTRATION STUFF CAN BE DONE BY JAPANESE PEOPLE AND NOT ME.
On Facebook I’ve noticed you use UK slang worlds like ‘banger’ and ‘peng’, have you spent time in the UK?
I HAVE, MY FIRST WIFE WAS ACTUALLY FROM THE UK. SO I SPENT MANY YEARS THERE ARGUING WITH HER (SPECIALLY BECAUSE THE FOOD, I DON’T LIKE THE BEANS) AND MANY MONTHS AFTER WE BROKE UP VISITING TO KEEP UP WITH DIVORCE PROCEEDINGS. I LEARNT UK SLANG WORDS LIKE ‘PENG’ AND ‘BEANGOOSE’ FROM MY LAWYERS, WHO WERE ALL D******** AND LOST ME A LOT OF MONEY, I AM 17 YEARS OLD BY THE WAY.
So what are the top 3 peng bangers that you’re listening to at the moment?
I hope this isn’t a silly question, but do you have a favourite type of flute?
YES, THIS IS A SILLY QUESTION.
Melt festival this summer near Berlin, are you going?
NAH THEY DIDN’T BOOK ME, I WON’T GO. LINE UP IS PONY TOO, VENGABOYS ARE NOT PLAYING.
I hear you’re a fan of West Coast rapper Lil B. What’s your favourite track?
ALL HIS TRACKS ARE THE SAME, I SEE THE CAREER OF LIL B AS ONE, I DON’T SEPARATE HIS WORK, EVERYTHING IS 1, SO MY FAVOURITE IS HIM. I ALSO LIKE LIGHT OF THE LIL BUMBLEBEES.
In light of that, what would you say is the most #Based thing that has happened to you in the past year then?
I DISCOVERED CHOCOLATE COVERED BACON.
Do you have a final message for Leeds Student readers?
KEEP GOING STUDYING, STOP GETTING WASTED ON WEEKENDS AND THINK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT YOUR FUTURE, WHO DO U THINK YOU ARE? YOU ARE ADULTS, NOT KIDS, YOU HAVE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES TO DO, AND IT SEEMS YOU ONLY CARE ABOUT #SELFIES AND TRY TO GET LAID ON REALLY TRASHY CLUBS WITH THE WORST COMMERCIAL DRUMNBASS REMIXES EVER?
