Food | Fresh Slice – Chocolate Orange Hobnobs

Where is the time for baking when there are books to be read and revision to be done? Why at this time, more than any other, do we students crave anything but those mood-boosting brain foods?

Fear not – this quick and easy recipe will alleviate your sugar craving and takes no time at all to make and bake!

Ingredients

  • 150g self raising flour
  • 150g caster sugar
  • 120g rolled oats
  • Zest of one large orange
  • 1 level teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
  • 150g butter
  • 1 large dessertspoon of golden syrup
  • 150g dark or milk chocolate (plus extra.. some always ‘disappears’)

Method

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4.
  2. Sift the flour into a large bowl with the bicarbonate of soda. Mix in the sugar, orange zest and the oats.
  3. Melt the butter over a low heat, and then add in the golden syrup and mix together.
  4. Make a well in the dry mixture, and pour in the melted butter and golden syrup. Mix until everything is combined – the dough will be fairly sticky.
  5. Divide the mix into about 20 balls, rolled in the palms of your hand. Place them on a baking tray, but leave plenty of space as they expand.
  6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until golden brown. Leave them to cool – eating them hot may initially seem like a good idea that will satisfy your biscuit craving, but a burnt mouth is the more likely outcome.
  7. Once cooled, melt the chocolate (some, if you have not managed to save all – no one will blame you), either in a glass bowl over a pan of just simmering water or in the microwave on a low heat with a bit of continual stirring.
  8. Dip the hobnobs in the chocolate one by one, then place them on a wire rack or plate until the chocolate has set – the waiting bit is hard, be warned.

Enjoy one or two with a cup of tea, or eat the lot to ease the pain of revision. The latter is more likely, but calories don’t count if you’re brain’s working out… Right?
