MONDAY – The 40 Year Old Virgin (ITV2 21:30)
Steve Carell is one of the funniest actors working in the industry today, a man who is one of the kings of American comedy and will steal your hearts in Judd Apatow’s directorial debut for film The 40 Year-Old Virgin. With a great cast full of comedy stars from Jane Lynch to Paul Rudd it will keep you laughing throughout, and the matter is tackled in such a way it is not crude and offensive but rather cute and mature.
TUESDAY – Magnum Force (Five USA 22:00)
The other week Dirty Harry appeared in our Freeview Flick choices, and so this week it is time to watch the actually decent sequel that lives up to the reputation. Clint Eastwood’s Inspector Harry Calahan is a brilliant character who we quite simply cannot get enough of with his witty quotes and carefree attitude. Brutal, action-packed and tense; sometimes the older thrillers are the best.
WEDNESDAY – The Damned United (BBC4 21:00)
Michael Sheen is known for taking on big personalities from history, such as Tony Blair and David Frost. In the rather fantastic The Damned United he plays football manager Brian Clough as the film traces his time as coach at Leeds United, an ill-fated part of his career. Sheen is magnificent and with a great script written by Peter Morgan which is both faithful and intelligent, it is an intriguing story well told.
THURSDAY – Twilight (Film4 18:35)
Okay… So it may be cool to hate on Twilight, but you got to admit it the films are actually quite good fun. You do have to ask yourself ‘if they are utterly awful why do they have such a big following’? So this Thursday it is time to actually sit down and watch the teen hit, and maybe even let yourself enjoy it. It is a modern teen classic that is getting the attention it receives for a reason. With an original, well-written and romantic story at the centre that you will not be able to get enough of, it kind of makes up for Kristen Stewart’s constantly sulky face.
FRIDAY – An Inspector Calls (Film4 16:45)
J.B.Priestley’s classic and rather mysterious play has only ever been adapted into film once, with the result being the wonderful and faithful 1954 production. Set in 1912 a family is disturbed by a policeman who brings news that a girl known to everyone has died mysteriously and any of the members could have had a hand in it. The film will keep you on your toes and on the edge of your seat as the tension and mystery builds and builds.
SATURDAY – X-Men: First Class (Channel 4 21:00)
On May 22nd X-Men: Days of Future Past the exciting sequel to both old and new strands of the X-Men franchise is being released uniting the older and newer cast together on screen, a fantasy for many superhero fans. It is therefore time to revisit this origin tale that is stylistic, action-packed, emotional and just a great superhero film. Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy have a brilliant relationship that is intriguingly developed as they become Magneto and Professor X. Here’s the trailer for the new X-Men: Days of Future Past to get you in the mood.
SUNDAY – 21 Jump Street (Five 22:00)
Much like with X-Men, the sequel to 21 Jump Street (22 in the sequel) is out soon, so it is time to revisit the surprise hit that was the first film. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill make the dream team of two young cops who have to go back to high school in an attempt to bring down a drug ring. Cue plenty of gags, hilarious crude humour and just plain silliness. It is fantastic fun that will be hard for anyone to not enjoy.
