Leeds’ lacrosse 1st teams enjoyed mixed fortunes in the Christie Cup on Wednesday, as the women defeated Manchester and demolished Liverpool, whilst the men succumbed to two defeats – although they were credited with one win in controversial circumstances.

It was the men’s side who began the day, losing 5-1 to a strong Manchester side. However, the visitors fielded an ineligible player in the win, and as a result forfeited the game.

With the first fixture being recorded as a win for Leeds, the side had a chance to claim another victory against Liverpool later on in what proved to be a much closer affair.

Liverpool opened the scoring with two quick goals, before the game settled down. Two more Liverpool goals followed, but Jethro Norman managed a response before half time.

The visitors were the first to score again in the second half, but the hosts soon responded through Jamie Campbell. Liverpool scored a sixth as the game neared its conclusion, but there was still time for Norman to score his second, ending the game as a spirited 6-3 defeat for Leeds.

Leeds’ women’s 1sts fared much better on the day. After a composed 9-4 victory against Manchester, the team made in two wins out of two with a 22-0 thrashing of Liverpool.

The Gryphons had to contend with torrid wind, rain and hail, but nevertheless managed to run through the opposition with ease time after time, and only a decent performance from Liverpool’s goalkeeper and the framework prevented Leeds from scoring even more.
