The Disraeli Gears
Brudenell Social Club
3/5
Supported by some of Leeds’ most up and coming bands, The Disraeli Gears gave a fantastic performance. The night exhibited a range of fresh talent, showing the Leeds music scene at its best.
The ZoZo band opened with a short, sweet and seamless set. The five-piece brought a dancey vibe which warmed up the audience and set the bar high for rest of the night. Next up were Collective ‘92, who took up the entire stage. With a range of soul and groove elements, they gave a lively rendition of ‘Blame It on the Boogie’ by the Jackson 5 – most of the audience singing along and dancing. After a break, Purple Emperors, a four-man folk band, started their brief, seemingly impromptu set, but gave an enjoyable, gentle and chilled performance to an audience who seemed rather distracted.
Then after much anticipation and sound checks, Disraeli Gears – a band named after a Cream album – rushed on stage to a now quiet audience unleashing their broody, yet energetic sound. Disraeli Gears’ Teia Fregona delivered great vocals – gentle but full of attitude. This added the grungy undertones to latest single ‘Hieroglyphs’, which was outstandingly performed by the four-piece. ‘Cuckoo’ had a playful lead guitar line which, although catchy, had substantial lyrical content. Short for time, the audience did not get their encore, but with a growing and supportive fan base, we can’t wait to hear more from The Disraeli Gears.
