Students have told LS of their dissatisfaction with Amber Cabs, the company endorsed by the Union.
One second year History student said: “I was so angry when I booked several cabs for a night out. Only one turned up and when I asked why they said that regardless of how many you book on the app they only send one.”
He added: “I’ve previously missed trains and lost money because of cabs that just never turned up.”
In a survey carried out by this paper just over half of respondents said the cabs were ‘usually’ on time. However, 17 per cent said they would never recommend the company.
Among the comments from students, one said: “Used to be good, now they’re terrible” while another added: “They are far more expensive than other companies, probably because they’re the only company promoted by the Union, so they can get away with it” and one going so far as to say Amber is the “most unreliable and understaffed service in Leeds”.
A spokesperson from Amber Cars stated that the
taxi firm make no guarantee on any time arrivals as they “do the best [they] can”. However, they do prioritise some journeys, for example, for travellers going to the train or bus stations.
Some students noticed the increased base price of £2.90 but Amber Cars responded by saying that over six years this has only gone up by 20p and the cost per mile has continued at the same rate.
A Union spokesperson declines to comment on its link with the company but said that all feedback would be passed on.
