The Cockpit was a fitting location to host Shy Nature; a venue buried deep in the underbelly of the city. The weather outside was abysmal, and the idea of being surrounded by an army of warm bodies seemed grotesquely appealing. As it was the quintets first ever visit to our vibrant musical hub, anticipations were high for the crowd and no doubt the band. The air gradually proceeded to thin as the unoccupied space filled, and alas, Shy Nature walks on.

The evening kicked off with the band launching a powerful introduction of driving guitar riffs, tight drum beats and anthem like melodies that lead to a spate of uncontrollable dance moves. Playing tracks from their self-titled EP released in September 2013, as well as a selection of new offerings: ‘Shoulders’, ‘World Roses’ and their single ‘Lie Back’, the 10-track set exploded with flare and confidence. Lead singer William Blackaby was captivating. His pitch was flawless; his strength energizing, and he appeared to be at total ease amidst the noisy chaos of the excitable crowd.

“Let’s have a dance, it’s Friday night!” yelled Will as they closed the underground railway arch down with ‘Deadly Sin’. The upbeat and punchy sounds greeted the space with rapturous applause.

Above all, the evening had gone to show that Shy Nature have mastered a solid style of guitar driven indie-rock which appears to dominate the small stage and has the capacity to satisfy the arenas. I’d watch out for this one Britain – you’ve got another one under your belt
