News | Thieves target empty houses over holidays

Student houses across Hyde Park and Headingley have been targeted by burglars over the Christmas period.

Over 30 houses were burgled during the first two weeks of January, with 64 per cent of these properties having being left insecure.

The main areas concerning police include north Hyde Park, encompassing Victoria Road, Cardigan Road and Brudenell Road. Other areas of concern include Belle Vue Road and the areas either side of Burley Park Railway Station. The Union’s Activities Officer Greg Sturge spoke to LS after his flat, located in the middle of Hyde Park, was burgled over the holiday period.

He said: “It is quite a shock when you do become the victim. I strongly recommend that all Leeds students ensure they have contents insurance, and check out the Knowledge website for advice about
securing your accommodation and staying safe in Leeds.”

A first year student told LS: “I was unsure about renting in Hyde Park because there are so many horror stories about the area.”

The Student Advice Centre has stated that students should not worry about or rush into signing for a house as there are hundreds of bedspaces let vacant every year.
