When my friend and I arrived at 7:30pm on a Saturday evening, Sukhothai was buzzing. A perfect escape from yet another wet and cold Leeds evening, the restaurant’s cosy interior transported us to a warmer continent. With stone Buddhas lining the windows, intricate flowered ceiling decorations, gold leafed wall hangings and wooden tables, the restaurant was incredibly inviting. Situated in Headingley, Sukhothai is, for us Hyde Park dwellers, a lot closer and more convenient than trekking into town for food in one of the city centre’s many big chains.

The professionalism of the attentive waiters and managers made our experience at Sukhothai one to remember. The speedy service, especially considering the busyness of the restaurant, was much appreciated as we arrived starving. While we sipped our beers and browsed the menu we were welcomed with complimentary prawn crackers and a sweet chilli dip.

From the very varied and exiting menu we chose a chicken curry, pad-Thai noodles, spring rolls and a chilli chicken and fresh mango salad, all of which was very tasty. As a bit of a spice fiend (putting a lot of chilli in my home cooked meals) I would have enjoyed a more authentic heat to the curry and salad. However I am sure some would appreciate the westernization of the normally incredibly hot cuisine. The spring rolls came with a fried onion on top, not typically acknowledged to be particularly Thai, but tasty nonetheless. I would highly recommend the mango salad if sweet and savoury is what tantalizes your taste buds as the juicy mango and crispy chicken were perfectly complimentary. Although there was no fiery after taste the chicken curry melted in the mouth and was delicious.

Everything was presented beautifully and considering the huge portion sizes that Sukhothai offers, the prices seemed reasonable. From about £4 for starters and £8-15 for main meals, it is possible to share a few dishes between two people (for example a curry or noodles, a starter and salad) which would only set you back at about £15 each.

The perfect place to take parents visiting Leeds or friends from home, Sukhothai provides that perfect escape from uni life that is inevitably needed at some point in the winter term. Sukhothai combines decent prices and great food within a lively setting that leaves you feeling well fed and indulged.
