Leeds recorded their first win of the season in impressive style by beating newly promoted Huddersfield 79-47 at the Edge. The win could well prove to be a significant win as it ended a losing streak of 8 games, following on from the end of last season’s results.
The home side were much the better team throughout the game; they’re quick passing and counter attacks following interceptions were too much for the visitors to handle. So too was their shooting accuracy across the team as they scored several three-pointers. Mike Hinton and Tommy Morelandwere particularly impressive in orchestrating offensive moves and spreading the play with a great variety of passing. Their superiority was clearly demonstrated as they took the first quarter 21-5.
Leeds began the second half just as they had finished the first scoring freely yet a few sloppy passes began to creep in as they lost intensity and concentration. This seemed to spark a revival in the Huddersfield team as they capitalised on enjoying more possession and began to find the net more readily after missing several free throws in the first quarter. Whilst Leeds still led 37-22 at half way, the away team had taken the second quarter 17-16, it would have been more had the accuracy of the point-guard been as impressive as his movember attempt. Things seemed to be veering into the ridiculous as the half-time entertainment provided by the cheerleaders was abandoned after an ipod malfunction.
At half time player-coach Hinton demanded more movement when attacking and to be faster than their opponents. He duly got his wish as Leeds started the third quarter in rampant fashion. Eiki Hanna and Jack Macdonald, who were excellent all game, took the game away from the visitors scoring from a variety of lay ups, three pointers and neat interplay. Hanna and Macdonald both finished the game as joint top scorers on 17 points each.
Leeds continued to press their opponents winning comfortably 79-47. This was a very accomplished team effort, and a deserved victory against spirited opponents. With key players coming back from injury this could just be the start of special for the 1sts.
