Lecturers throughout the university have been on strike today over demands for higher pay.
The Edward Boyle library cut its opening hours from 9am-5pm, with the Brotherton closing at 4pm.
Whilst the union remains open, cafes across campus such as Parkinson Court Cafe, Dolce Vita, The Edge Cafe all closed in support of the strike.
Alongside Leeds University, lecturers from the University of Bradford, Leeds Met and Leeds College of Arts were also in attendance.
The student exec released a statement earlier in the week addressing concerns from students about how the strike would affect them.
In the statement, Union Affairs officer Bradley Escorcio and Education office Alice Smart said:
“We have asked trade union representatives to circulate a message to their members advising lecturers to avoid assessing students on material missed as a result of the strikes and the University will be taking cancellations and lecture rescheduling into account during assessments.”
LS spoke to second year student Owen, to see how students were viewing the action: “I think the strike is important for us. It means a defense of the jobs we hope to find ourselves in when we graduate”.
Following the strike negotiations between the universities and unions are set to reopen, leaving the possibility for further action if an agreement can’t be reached.
