A 21 year old woman, believed to be a student, has been mugged in Meanwood by two men using a knife.
The victim was approached from behind by the attackers who cut the straps of her backpack with a knife. The girl sustained cuts to her hands and shoulder.
The incident happened at 9:45pm on August 31, when the woman was attacked on the Ridge Road footpath behind the Jet petrol station on Meanwood Road.
A 26 year old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and another robbery.
The suspect has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon and has been remanded in custody.
Detectives from North West Leeds Division’s robbery team are also investigating four similar incidents involving knives, including one attack on campus.
Inspector Ian O’Brien, who heads the Hyde Park and Woodhouse Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We will continue to do all we can to reduce street robbery and bring those who commit these offences to justice. We also need people to think about their personal safety when out and about in the city, particularly at night, and to consider the routes they take and how they travel.”
The Police have since increased their patrols in the areas where the attacks took place and are will be supported by additional patrols from dog units and mounted police over the coming weeks.
