Medical student died after taking banned weight loss pills

An inquest into the death of Medical student Sarah Houston has found she died after taking a banned fat burning pill.

The 23-year-old was found dead in her bedroom last September.

Wakefield Coroner’s Court heard that Houston had been taking dinitrophenol (DNP), which it is thought she bought online, along with her anti-depressants.

Houston had suffered from anorexia nervosa since the age of 15 and later struggled with bulimia.

The inquest reached a verdict of death by misadventure.

Sarah’s family are calling for DNP to be made illegal.

In a statement read out by Sarah’s 29-year-old brother James, her family said:

“There have been at least 62 further deaths related to DNP. We as a family are distraught and are keen to make sure no other family suffer in this way.
