2013: the year that some of us will graduate in, others will call an academic-write off, and others just scraped through thanks only to copious amounts of Red Bull and 24 hour library clusters. Whilst academic standards may vary, excitement levels are more uniform, bubbling at all-time highs with summer just a couple of exams away. With that joyous season on the horizon, we enter a period of transition in fashion; a tricky one we don’t always succeed in getting right. A lack of patience often sees us channelling high-summer in March, with hot pants and sandals, and goose bumps to match. Alas, this season, it will be different. Oh, so different, as there’s something major happening in May that will have us holding on to Spring. Expect sequins, expect skirts, and expect feathery little capes, as finally, The Great Gatsby comes to a cinema near you.

Yes, the long awaited Luhrmann film, starring Carey Mulligan and hunky Leo DiCaprio hits our screens mid-May and is set to have us fashion folk in a ‘20s Spring flap. A rehash of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, prepare for some retro styles to hit the high street and inevitably influence your Summer Ball ensemble.

But that’s not all. (Thanks goodness as we weren’t willing to wait ‘til May to sport our sequined skirts and Art-Deco accessories.) Letting us show off our razzle-dazzle a little early, Northern Ballet’s Great Gatsby production brought its world premiere to Leeds in March , complete with costumes, glitz and good old-fashioned glamour. Running until Saturday 9th March in Leeds, before touring the rest of the UK, if anyone is in need of Summer Ball dress-spiration, may be suggest you buy a ticket.

Whether you just want to give a nod to the era with a jewelled-headpiece, or go all out with a knock-your-socks-off, shimmy-shake ensemble, here are a few ‘20s ideas to try at the ballet or the ball.

The Great Gatsby is released 17th May 2013.
