The University’s plans for a new library have been approved, with construction due to begin in July.

The library, set to be built on the site of the Emmanuel Centre car park, will open its doors to students in early 2015. The new facility will consist of four floors and is set to contain 1,000 individual study spaces. It will also house 170 computer terminals and a ground-floor café.

University Librarian Stella Butler said: “This will be a real landmark building for the University and it will signal our commitment to providing the best education for our students.”

LUU Education Officer Josh Smith added, “I am excited for students to have access to what will be a very up to date building to study in and use as a resource. Good quality library space is always going to be a priority for students, which is why this new facility is going to be a fantastic addition to campus”.

A spokesperson for the library added, “Alongside this new facility, the Library will continue to invest in and develop its existing buildings and services; in particular it is hoped that funding will be forthcoming for a major refurbishment of the Edward Boyle Library to follow on once the new library is open.”
