Bhanging night out

bhangra society leeds university

The Union’s most energetic society will be representing Leeds at this Saturday’s Capital Bhangra competition in London.

‘Ministry of Bhangra Leeds’ is one of seven teams competing to win £500 prize money in what has been described as the UK’s most welcoming University team bhangra competition.

Capital Bhangra was launched in 2012 and takes place at the Bloomsbury Theatre. Teams perform a eight to nine minute traditional Punjabi dance routine to musical accompaniment.

The teams will be assessed by a panel of three judges on synchroneity, level of ability and costumes, among other things.

Harwinder Singh Mander, who launched Capital Bhangra, said, “It is a privilege for us to provide a platform to University students who want to showcase traditional Punjabi dance forms on a big stage, and similarly to give young people the opportunity to experience organising an event of this magnitude, as we have done this year.”

He continued, “We aim to put on a great show for the audience and pride ourselves on looking after every competitor who takes part in the weekend, because without them of course there is no competition!”

This will be Ministry of Bhangra’s first year at Capital Bhangra, and they face competition from last year’s winners UCL and LSE.

The competition takes place at 7pm on January 26 and tickets cost £12.
