Women Squash the Competition

Leeds Women v Bristol

After a successful weekend away in Edinburgh competing in the BUCS Squash 2012-13 Premier North (Stage 1), LUU Squash Women’s 1st played Oxford 1sts this week in the battle to be in the top 4 teams in Britain.

With a home advantage the matches began. Seed 4, Rachel Buckingham, made a confident start for Leeds, playing well and determined, she won a good 3-0. Gemma Hill then went on to beat Oxford’s 3rd seed comfortably in an outstanding performance. This meant Leeds were in a strong position to win but needed 1st and 2nd seeds to win in order to secure their place at the weekend. Emily Penkett was next up; after a very positive start, the Oxford girl upped her game, proving a strong opponent. Meanwhile, it was sports scholor Sam Ward who secured the win with a very safe 3-0 win. Emily’s nerve-racking second and third games concluded with a win for Leeds and secured the comfortable 4-0 overall win for leeds.

This puts the women’s 1sts in the top 4 teams Britain. Where in the top 4 is to be decided very soon as the next matches are this weekend in Pontefract with some tough competition against the very best teams. The games continue throughout the weekend against Leeds Met, Birmingham and Bristol.
