BUCS Indoor Rowing

LUUBC stormed to victory for a second week running at the BUCS Indoor Rowing competition. 37 Rowers were welcomed to the event by Sheffield University at their Octagon theatre. Both novices and seniors attended the event, the novices competing over a 1km distance and the seniors racing over 2km.

The relatively short distances meant that maximum power was needed in order to achieve the fastest times possible. This race was particularly daunting for the novices, many of whom were competing in a rowing event for their first time. However, they had a strong record of rowing machine practices behind them since much of their training has been transferred to the gym lately due to LUUBC’s home river, the River Ouse in York, being unusable due to flooding. After psyching each other up in the spectator-driven atmosphere, the results started pouring in. Hollie Light, new to the novice women’s squad this year, won her 1km heat in a time of 3 minutes 41 seconds.

This then propelled her to the top of the leader board, where she remained until the end of the competition, earning her a gold medal in the women’s beginners category. Hollie won the gold, competing against over 100 rowers and so her victory as a rookie to the sport means all the more. Sophie Neal then went on to gain a silver medal on behalf of the senior women, completing her 2km event in a time of 7 minutes 34 seconds, and being beaten by a competitor from Salford by only 0.7 seconds.

The novice men also had a great turn out, Jack Regan leading his squad with a 1km time of 3 minutes 9 seconds. All the novices, both men and women, should be exceptionally proud of their results in their first competitive race. The club’s large intake this year has provided us with great enthusiasm and motivation for the year ahead. With these results on land, we can expect a series of powerful performances in their imminent first races on the water.
