Badmin-done it!

This Wednesday’s fixtures bought a tough set of matches for the Leeds University Badminton teams. Women’s firsts faced tough oppositions in their opening rounds of the Trophy event whilst the second team battled it out for a place in the second round of the Conference Cup.

The still undefeated women’s 1st team sailed trough their first round of the Trophy with a 7-1 win over Sheffield 1sts. Both singles players had no trouble in securing the first four rubbers, dropping very few points in the process. In the doubles, Harriet West stepped up to pair Ellie Travers, and they proved no match for Sheffield, winning both games comfortably 21-11/21-14 and 21-13/21-7. Alex Brown made her first team debut of the season, pairing Lizzie Hunt.

After a nervy first game they eventually got their eye in, and beat the second pair 21-17/21-19. The girls, who currently sit top of the northern 1A league table with an impressive goal difference of 20, will now face Glasgow in the second round of the Trophy. The women’s 2nds, who are the newest addition to badminton teams, fought their way through to the 2nd round of the Northern Conference Cup, with an impressive 6-2 win over Liverpool Hope 1sts.

The team, who so far have won two and lost one match, sits 2nd in the Northern 3B division table, with the same amount of points Hull 1sts who are one position above. The girls are aiming for promotion into Northern 2B by the end of the season, and will not give up without a fight. Their second round match of the Conference Cup will be on the 28th November against UCLAN 1sts. The men’s 2nd team bowed out in the first round of the Northern Conference Cup, losing 6-2 to a Durham seconds. The boys only managed to scrape one singles and one doubles match, but all the Durham players adopted very attacking playing styles and won the other six rubbers. The next rounds of the Trophy and Conference Cup are on the 28th November, lets hope that both make it into to the quarter-finals!
