Since LUU’s first ever Yoga Society started 3 years ago it has grown to over 700 Facebook group members and attracts a number of students to all of its classes. It is a friendly and open society which welcomes anybody who is interested in yoga.
The practice of yoga involves a series of postures in which the body and mind are engaged as one; an exercise bringing physical benefits to the body and a relaxed and content state of mind. It has been practised for thousands of years and is renowned for improving balance, flexibility, strength and can also aid the relief of tension (great for a break from essay stress!)
Thee society offers a variety of different types of yoga, including Ashtanga: energetic sequence of postures designed to bring incredible strength, flexibility and endurance to the body and a sense of stillness to the mind. Classes are held every day in the Union, taught by professional teachers from studios around Leeds. Virtually all are suitable for any ability level, apart from the Monday Ashtanga class.
The society also organises workshops and retreats alongside weekly classes. These include a 3-day retreat in June to the Yorkshire Dales, where members took part in yoga and meditation classes and even a massage workshop. Socials include meals where delicious and healthy food is served.
There really are no entry requirements for yoga; it is an individual, non-competitive practice which anybody can do and which can be challenging if you want it to be, but is also fulfilling and enjoyable. Yoga Soc welcomes everyone. Don’t worry about bringing a mat as they are provided; just come along wearing comfortable clothing 10 minutes before the class.
