Ten comedians. Five minutes each. Whether they make it that long is entirely up to the audience. Mr Ben’s Gong Show aims to showcase new and upcoming stand-up talent from the Yorkshire area, but with a twist. Three members of the audience are given ‘red cards’, and thereby the power to vote out any comedian they choose. Once all three are raised, the comic is ‘gonged out’. Think ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, but with comedy and a bar.
From a self-labelled lesbian-feminist to a guitar-playing protester, topics range widely; including class divide, stereotypes, and the behaviour of a pet cat. The diversity of style and content in each performance means that there is something for everyone; but also that some gags fall flat. A few acts made use of some quite dark material; using jokes that you know you shouldn’t laugh at but just can’t help it. Others made use of props or song, while some jokes were more ‘so bad it’s good’. Some surprised everyone by coming up with routines which had everyone roaring with laughter. A few unfortunately fell victim to the gong, both due to unfunny material and awkwardness onstage. Particular dislike was felt for the one comic who foolishly insulted Leeds University.
However, the show flows well and has a fantastic host who keeps the audience laughing, bringing on some regular comics to warm-up the evening and providing some witty interaction with the audience. Regular intervals means that drinks can be topped up, and there’s a great atmosphere in the intimate space. Plus, it’s only £1 entry with a student card!
This is definitely a good night out for groups, so grab your mates, grab some drinks and sit back and enjoy an evening of comedy talent. You never know, you could be watching the next Michael McIntyre!
