Tonight is a special night for all the drum & bass heads out there, as Mint Warehouse plays host to a rare appearance from the legendary Valve Sound System, presented by Jungle Jam. Started in 2001 by jungle pioneers Dillinja and Lemon D, the meticulously designed system has since toured many of the UK’s major clubs, with its full frequency range and powerful, deep bass satisfying DnB fans all over the country. Tonight Valve reaches Leeds, with a highly-anticipated 90 minute performance from the almighty Goldie, as well as sets from Logistics b2b Nu:Tone, Hazard, N-Type, Lenzman and of course, Lemon D and Dillinja.
Leeds Student Clubs’ Ryan Hubball chatted with Dillinja ahead of his set tonight…
Dillinja, you’ve got a reputation as one of the most prolific artists in drum & bass history. What is it about the scene that gives you the inspiration to continue producing amazing music?
My inspiration comes from the drums. My favourite instrument in the whole world is the drum kit. I love the variation of drum influences from all types of music used in drum and bass. Influences from jazz, reggae to rock…
The Valve sound system is renowned for being one of the best in the world for drum & bass and we’re very excited to have it in Leeds; what was your reason for creating such an awesome system?
The reason we built the system was because most sound systems in night clubs sound shit.
We’ve seen you in Leeds many times before for many brilliant nights. Is there anything about Jungle Jam that makes it a standout night for you?
The promoters are genuine lovers of the music from the start of the scene till now, providing consistently quality events… Oh and the fact that they’ve used the name Jungle!
What are the most memorable nights in Leeds for you?
All the nights at Stylus and Event Horizon are classics…
What direction are we going to see Valve recordings take in the future?
The label will release music from across the spectrum. Anything we are into gets released (not only DnB).
Many drum & bass producers (dBridge as Velvit, Marcus Intalex as Trevino etc.) are experimenting in other genres. Have you got any interest in producing anything other than DnB?
I will definitely be putting out other genres of music in the future. It’s something I have to do.
Have you got any ‘guilty pleasures’ that you love listening to?
I love listening to all types of music. Some of the artists I love: Man Parrish, U2, Milton Wright, Loose Ends, Renegade Soundwave, Kanye West, Vangelis, John Coltrane, Miguel, Prince, Ian Dury and the Blockheads. I could go on forever!
‘Jungle Jam presents: The Valve Sound System’ is tonight [Friday 19th October] at Mint Warehouse, 10pm – 7am. If you haven’t yet got a ticket, they’re on sale for £16 via Ticket Arena or Skiddle.
