The first half was one of much grit and tenacity but the opening minutes really lacked any real rhythm. When both teams had settled, Carnegie had very little to smile about as they struggled to cope against an onslaught of pressure, and it wasn’t too long before Daniele Jelly opened the scoring for the Gryphons as a result of some scrappy and flustering defending.
The lead and momentum were safely guarded for the remainder of the first half, with Ed Hallett standing out as a formidable presence, helping his team into to the halftime break with a 1-0 advantage.
The second half of the game started much like the first half ended, with the Gryphons controlling the rhythm of play and applying the vast majority of the pressure.
George Bucknell scored his first goal of the day, just before Jack Tuckwell tucked away the University of Leeds third with ease; Bucknell got himself on the scoreboard once more for the Gryphons moments later.
The goal rush could have hit double figures, but for some exquisite goalkeeping. However, they did save their very best for last. Andy Farenhiem’s excellently timed deflection gave the University a five-goal lead, consequently, leaving their rivals with very little chance of a realistic comeback. However, Carnegie did muster up the courage to earn themselves a consolation goal in the last ten-seconds of the game.
To say that the entire seventy-minutes of the game were one-sided would be a little unfair, as Carnegie did have some sparks of creativity in their midfield. However, it simply wasn’t enough to match the mighty power of the Gryphons.
