Emily Nuttall, Media Secretary of Leeds University’s Women’s Football, previews this year’s Varsity…
At the beginning of this season we received the news we had been hoping for – LUUWAFC have been awarded Gryphons status, testimony to our hard work and dedication both on and off the pitch last season. This news certainly spurred us on as we began a successful pre-season training programme at the beginning of September as well as the formation of a third/development team for the 2012/13 season.
As a Gryphons team we now hope to capitalise on our results from last year. For LUUWAFC 1sts, our 2011 Varsity match culminated in a penalty shoot-out and eventually sudden death in which we gave an excellent performance but were defeated, ending the game at 1-0 to Met. Last season was excellent for LUUWAFC 1sts, who came top of the BUCS Northern 2B league and were promoted to the Northern 1A league. Due to the promotion and outstanding performance from last year a 2012 Varsity win and a top three position in the BUCS Northern 1A league is most certainly on the cards!
Elsewhere LUUWAFC 2nds were met with a 7-0 defeat at Varsity 2011– this year, we hope to attain a draw at the very least and show Met what we are capable of. LUUWAFC 2nds finished 5th in the BUCS league 2011/12 and this season, playing in the BUCS Northern 3B league, will be pushing for promotion.
