A Designer You Need To Know: Charlotte Olympia

Counting Alexa Chung as her #1 fan (and friend), Charlotte Olympia is the kitsch-iest, cutest accessories brand we know. Inspiration stems from the glamour of ’40s fashion, which when combined with her unique, modern spin and creative direction gives way to shoes sporting kitty ears and clutches that come with teeny Russian dolls for handles.

The reigning Queen of Quirky, Charlotte Olympia Dellal is the brains behind the brand — yes, also the sister of Alice — who is making big steps forward in the industry, with perhaps her celebrity following to thank. After studying at London’s Cordwainers, and working under the likes of Giambatista Valli and Ungaro, she learnt her tricks from the top-dogs. Making bags, boots and statement sandals, she’s a one-stop success with style-setting celebs. And ‘statement’ she certainly doesn’t do lightly, let us spotlight a particular pair we recently saw in the showroom sporting a block heel formed of a metal framed bird cage structure housing a tiny floating wooden parrot. Oh, did we mention she was kooky? Flaunted on the feet of Beyonce, and grasped in the clutch of Kate Moss, the British maven is making waves in the international market- and that’s not just due to her wonderfully coiffed locks. A stockist list of enviable proportions including Net-A-Porter (need we say more?), her price point isn’t the type to suit spontaneous sprees or one-time wears with pairs clocking in at the £600 mark. Even Alexa has taken those cute kitties for a walk more than once. Arguably out of reach of crumby student budgets, fortunately for us, they’re visual enough to admire from afar. Admire, then weep, and repeat.

(Psst– you didn’t hear it from us, but Boohoo are pleasing savvy-student budgets everywhere, looking to Charlotte Olympia for, errm, ‘inspiration’…)
