Interview // Rolo Tomassi @ Y Not Festival 2012

New album on the way – how do you feel about the new material at this stage?
Good – we’re pretty desperate to start playing the new stuff now. Some of it has been written since November last year so we’re itching to start playing new songs.

When can we expect a release?
We’re hoping for some time in October.

How might the next record differ from your previous releases, if at all?
It’s going to sound different purely on the basis that there’s new people writing it now – it still sounds like Rolo Tomassi but we think it’s a lot more concise… there are more songs that feel like they are going to hit the mark straight away… it all feels a lot more focused again.

Last year you gave us your Eternal Youth LP with unheard non-album tracks. What was the inspiration behind the decision to get this material out there?
It was mainly to do with the limited releases we did when we were younger… we had a lot of people emailing us asking where they could get them from.. we just wanted to make everything available for everyone that wanted to hear it so we could draw a line under the old material. It was just a fun way of cataloguing the first four or five years of being in the band. It was a nice end point before starting on the new record.

Have you been to check out any of the other artists/bands here today?
We arrived and watched Brontide play and then we have just been hanging around and checking things out.

And while touring, if we were to check out your individual music collections, what kind of sounds might we expect to find?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs… Really nice, not-heavy music… we didn’t like listening to much different music while recording because we… well, we just didn’t like to.

Do you have any guilty pleasures? Any artists/bands you might be ashamed to admit to loving?
I don’t believe in guilty pleasures at all… I think it’s all relative and if it’s going to help contribute to what you’re doing then you shouldn’t feel bad about why you like something.

Have you been following the Olympics? Any particular events that you’ve found yourselves stuck into?
Yes! Handball… we love it.

Rolo Tomassi are well known for providing a chaotic live show, so what’s the craziest thing you’ve seen while on tour?

Last year on the Architects tour, on their final encore on their final show of that tour… literally everyone decided to get up and stage dive – even people who had clearly never done it before.
